Japanese Music and Traditional Monuments in Kyoto and Otsu

IMS 2017 in Tokyo Post-Congress Tour, March 24-26, 2017

Outline of the Tour:
This excursion is focused on the Traditional Culture of Japan – Music, Architecture, Gardens and Food in the region of the Old Imperial Capital Kyoto. It is conceived as a trip of two full days but can be extended on private initiatives. It is organized in a way that every evening the program can be individually terminated (return to Tokyo). For the whole tour from Friday morning to Saturday evening there is a rented bus available. The hotel rooms are reserved for single occupancy.

Detailed Program
Friday 24th
08:00 Departure from Tokyo by the Super Express-Train Shinkansen.
10:17 Arrival in Kyoto Station. Transfer with rented bus to the Oe Noh-Theatre in Kyoto.
11:00 Getting a noh-specialists’ English introduction to this theatre-hall which is the oldest of its kind in Kyoto.
11:30 Transfer to a smaller noh-stage (Kashōkaku) for examining the peculiar acoustic structure of a noh-stage and experiencing its superb sound qualities by listening to the performance of a noh-song and several short pieces of music seldom heard outside of Japan (like the mouthorgan shō. the oldest shamisen-music yanagawa-shamisen with kyōjiuta and the historical shakuhachi sanshaku sanun – the program is not fixed yet).
13:00 Lunch (bento-box)
13:30 transfer to the Temple Miidera in Otsu. Arriving ca 14:00. Cherry blossom viewing.
15:00 Visit of ancient buildings (exemplary beautiful architecture) within the precincts of Miidera (specially guided tour in Japanese with English translation)
16:00 Transfer to Guignard’s place. Aperitif on the rooftop of the house while enjoying the view of Lake Biwa. Later dinner-party in the living room.
20:00 Transfer with the bus to the Lodging: Kansai Seminar House in Kyoto. Arrival ca. 21:00. (For people returning to Tokyo: Departure from Kyoto-Station : 20:56)

Saturday 25th
10:00 Serving Green-Tea in the Traditional Garden-Teahouse of the Kansai Seminar House
12:00 Transfer to the Kami-Shichiken Theatre-Hall
13:00 Attending a spring music/dance performance of young geishas (maiko).
16:00 Light late-afternoon meal close to the Kami-Shichiken Theatre-Hall
17:30 Transfer to the Alti Hall, Kyoto.
18:00 Attending a concert organized by Alison Tokita of Asian art songs. (ending 20:30)
20:30 Transfer to the Kansai Seminar House. Arrival ca. 21:00
(For people returning individually to Tokyo: Departure from Kyoto-Station : 21:18)

Sunday 26th
10:00 Check-out in the Kansai Seminar House. End of the tour-program. Individual return to Tokyo or individual extension of the stay.
09:30-17:00 Attending the symposium The art song and cultural identity in the colonial settings of East Asia and Australia at the Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts in Kyoto.
